Choosing Palm Trees And Plants For Your Garden

Palm trees are popular in gardens all over the world and are usually found in the tropics, costal regions, deserts and generally warmer areas. Some species grow faster than other species, particularly due to the climate which affects the growth in most types of palm trees. Some palm trees need continually warmer weather while some can bear the colder climates. In some trees, the warmer weather results in faster growth and, in those trees, the trunk becomes taller more quickly. This is important to consider when choosing the appropriate plants for your garden, particularly if you want a tall line of trees in a shorter period of time.

There are several types of palm trees varying by commonality to growth rate. Queen Palms are the most common species of palm trees and, actually, do fairly well in the colder climates. Queen Palms need a lot of water and quality soil. They reach around twenty-five feet in a time span of seven to ten years, but they can reach a height of sixty feet. The King Palm is a faster growing tree and grows faster with full sun. It requires a rich and nutrient soil and plenty of water, but with good care these trees can reach twenty-five feet in ten years and have a maximum height potential of approximately forty feet. The King Palm is a good species choice if you desire a shade or canopy of trees.

Another choice in faster growing trees is the Majesty Palm, which reaches around ten feet in ten years and can reach thirty-five feet within a twenty year period of time. This palm needs soil rich in magnesium and, as expected, plenty of water though they do not do well near the ocean due to the abundance of salt in the air. The King Kong or Black Trunk Palms are also faster growing trees with the potential to reach eight feet tall. Unlike some other species, though, this tree grows in width before it grows in height and also grows large, horizontal leaves. It is one of the wider types as far as trunk diameter. Finally, the Royal Palms are moderately fast in growth, possibly reach twenty feet in ten years with quality care. This tree requires a nutrient rich soil, a lot of sun and plenty of water. Similar to the King Kong or Black Trunk species, the Royal Palms grow a wider trunk before growing tall. It does not grow well in colder weathers, specifically before twenty six degrees Fahrenheit.

As you see, the needs of palm trees vary by species. You must consider the needs of the different types before you plant it to be sure you can meet its requirements and allow it to grow to its full potential. Some do well in continually warmer weathers, while some can handle the occasional colder weather. Also, be sure to ask the nursery about the day length of each type of plant. Some trees need a lot of continual sun while others do better in partial sun. It is important to understand the heat and sun requirements for the tree you choose.

The Rain gives life to the Dead Earth; this is for people who would listen and understand.

And Allah has sent down water from the cloud and therewith given life to the earth after its death; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who would listen

And if you ask them who is it that sends down water from the clouds, then gives life to the earth with it after its death, they will certainly say, allah. say: all praise is due to Allah. nay, most of them do not understand

Allah is capable to give life to the Dead, the same way as the Rain gives life to the Dead Earth! You may notice that the Quran always makes link between the scientific facts and the religious notions. You may also notice that the Quran always reminds us with the Revival of the Dead, the Afterlife and the Day of Judgment.

Know How to Grow Grapes

Grape growing can be a very satisfying hobby. All you need to grow grapes is an area in your back yard that well drained and not so rich in nutrients. The grape seems to do better in poor soil. When planting the vines in a rich soil, the nutrients will go to growing more leave and nonproducing vines. Whereas with poor soil, what nutrients are in the soil will go toward the production of fruit and more fruit bearing vines. The best place to plant the vines is on the south side of a hill where there is plenty of air circulation and plenty of sunshine.  Never plant your vineyard in a shady area, because the grapes need plenty of sunlight in order for the fruit to ripen and be sweet and juicy.

The main part of grape growing is planting the right vine for the climate you are in. Always check with the local Agriculture Agent to see what type of grapes is best for your area. Another place you can get information about what type of grape to plant is a nearby Agriculture College, or a grape grower in your area. You most likely will be able to find a vine that is suited for your area and climate. Make sure that where ever you get your information that they know whether you are planting table grapes or wine grapes, it makes a big difference. Table grapes are usually large grapes without seed and thin skins, where wine grapes are small, thick skinned and contain more sugar.

A very important part of grape growing is the trellis the grapes will climb on. In the wild grape vine climb up trees, buildings and anything that will support them that they can climb. But, you will need your vines low enough that you can pick the grapes when they are ripe. The best trellis system is to cement post into the ground that is strong enough to hold the grapes up even in heavy wind and rain. The post should be braced so they will not lean in any direction. After the cement has set up around the post you can run two rows of stainless steel wire on the post for the vines to run on. When the grape vine get long enough to reach the bottom wire you will need to train the vines to run the wire by loosely wrapping the vines around the wire. As the vines grow they will wrap themselves tightly around the wire making a great support for the fruit.

In about three years when the vines begin to produce fruit you may need to add some fertilizer to the roots of the vines. Make sure the fertilizer is needed by taking a soil sample. You do not want the soil to be too rich or the plants will start producing more leave and vines that are not wanted instead of taking the nutrients from the soil and producing grapes. Also remember you will need to keep the vines pruned for best results. The main thing is to enjoy growing grapes.

Selection Of Pumpset For Irrigation System In Agriculture

  The selection of right type of pump will require a knowledge of systems head and pump characteristics curves .  The normal procedure is to first determine the system head curves and the desired discharge.  The characteristic curves or tables giving the performance of various models of pumps are used to select the right type of pump, which will operate efficiently at or near the desired discharge and the systems total dynamic head.

System head curve

The system head curve gives the relationship between the discharge and the total head in pumping system.  The contribution of various parameters to the total head such as well drawdown, frictional head and operating head usually increases with discharge. 

To determine discharge drawdown relationship for particular well, a pumping test should be done by adopting proper procedure.  When the pump is used to lift water for operating a pressurized irrigation system, the operating pressure is to be worked out using standard procedure and should be included in the total head.

Discharge capacity of pumps :

The data on the safe discharge rate of the well ( or other source of water )  and the discharge rate required for the crops to be irrigated with a particular cropping pattern are estimated, if necessary cropping pattern can be adjusted according to safe yield of well in different season.  Thus, pumps capacity should be designed considering two factors : 1) Safe yield of well and 2) Water requirement of selected cropping pattern in peak periods.  If there is no constraint on the availability of water , the pump capacity may be determined on the basis of the water requirement of the crops to be grown : otherwise pumping plant is to be designed to match safe yield of well.  The safe yields of  wells can be determined by conducting a pumping test.

If discharge capacity of pump is to be designed from crop water requirement following relationship can be used.

Power Requirement in pumping

The power requirement in pumping can be calculated after knowing total head  under which pump operates and discharge required.  Water horse power (WHP) is the theoretical power required for pumping.  It is expressed as,

Pump characteristic curves

            Centrifugal pumps have well defined operating properties, which vary with the type of pump, manufacturer and model.  Those properties are expressed as characteristics curves.  These curves also known as performance curves show the interrelationship between capacity, head, power and efficiency of pump. 

A knowledge of pump characteristics enable the selection of pump which is best adapted to a particular set of conditions, thus obtaining a high value of efficiency at a low operating cost.  For this purpose, it is usual to plot the head, the power input and efficiency as ordinate against the capacity as abscissa at a constant pump speed.

Head capacity curve

            The H-Q curve shows how much water the pump will deliver at a given head.  As the discharge increases, the head decreases.

Efficiency capacity curve

             The efficiency capacity curve shows relationship between the efficiency and the capacity of the pump.  The efficiency may be observed to increases from O, when the discharge is O, to a maximum and then decreases.  There is generally only one peak efficiency, which is related to a specific capacity.  Efficiencies vary with the type of pump manufacturer and model.

Input power discharge curve

             The  input power is related to as the break horse power to drive the pump.  The BHP- Q curve for a centrifugal ump increases as the discharge increases, reaching peak at a somewhat higher rate of discharge than the which produces the maximum efficiency.  The nature of curve varies with speed.

Selection of proper centrifugal pump

            A centrifugal pump is designed to operate efficiently within specified range of capacity and total head when applied to a different set of conditions, the same pump  will not work efficiently, irrespective of amount of power applied to operate it.  Therefore, by matching the system head curve for a range  of discharges above design discharge rate, with the characteristics of various models of pumps, the right type of pump giving maximum efficiency can be selected.  Alternatively, tabular data on pump characteristics can also be used for this purpose.

            It is usual to draw system head curve on tracing paper, on the same scale as the pump characteristic curves.  The tracing paper is placed on the graph showing the pump characteristics.  The characteristics of pumps of various models should be matched with system head curve.  This will lead to the selection of the pump, which gives the maximum efficiency and the desired discharge at the estimated total head.  The point of intersection of head capacity curve of pump and system head curve provides a point of selection.  At this point, the pump will give  a discharge of 3150 lhp against to total head of 31 m and efficiency of 65 per cent.  The power input is    12 hp.  By careful selection from wide range of products , it is possible to select a pump  , which will give desired discharge at the estimated total head and provide an efficiency of 75-80 per cent or more

For pressurised irrigation system, usually a high head low discharge ump is desired.  If such type of pump is not available in market, then required head can be developed by using multistage pump or connecting pumps in series.  In this case, the number of stages will be equal to the total head divided by the head developed by a single stage pump.

Important points to be considered while selection proper size  of pump : 

If pumping unit is to be selected for a site with fluctuating well water level, a pump with steeper head capacity curve should be selected so that a minimum variation in discharge with change in operating heads will be  resulted.  A pump with flatter head- capacity curve in such  a condition results into large variation in the discharge with smaller change in head.
Multi-stage pumps should be used when the required head can not be developed by a single stage. It is particularly important in case of pressurised irrigation systems, where usually a high head low discharge pumps are required.  The number of stages are equal to the total head divided by the head developed by a single stage pump.  The selection of right type of multi-stage pump require development of characteristics curves for two or more pumps operating in series and matching system head curve with multi-stage pump curve
Pumps installed in parallel should be used where low head high discharge pumps are required as in case of pumping water from scarp well.  The combined discharge of two pumps operating in parallel is equal to the sum of the individual discharges for s specific head.

When we broke the carafe of our old Braun coffee maker, we looked up all reviews, including Consumer Reports to find a new one. What we never liked about the Braun was the way it dripped when we poured. We love our decaf in the morning. We bought the Michael Graves and found it made DELICIOUS coffee and poured perfectly, but then we agreed that it was extremely slow. So we returned it. We then tried two others that got great reviews: the Mr. Coffee Programmable with Thermal Carafe and the Cuisinart Brew Central. Both made coffee hot and fast–but VERY WEAK, no matter how much coffee we added. Mr. Coffee’s thermal decanter was darn heavy to lift when full. Cuisinart was the highest rated in Consumer Reports and was the last we tried. Okay, my husband liked that it “dinged” when the coffee was ready, but it was still WEAK. We went back to Michael Graves and LOVE it. Now it seems to make perfect sense: if it drips SLOWLY, it gives the water a chance to soak up the flavor of the grinds. As far as the other drawback: not being able to put the carafe in the dishwasher…it’s true, but it’s a small price to pay for a GREAT cup of coffee. I say five stars for this, and I hope it holds up. After our own “brew and taste” tests, slow but steady wins the race for a GREAT cup of coffee. Have a little patience. Good things come to those who wait…and you can pre-program it if you get up that early!

I read a lot of reviews of this coffee maker, and finally decided to trust Consumer’s Report. I’m glad I did. We’ve been using ours daily for two weeks and are very pleased with it. It doesn’t leak at all. The blue glow doesn’t “light up the whole kitchen.” The numbers are not “distorted.” I’m not saying those people who left one-star reviews are wrong, just that either they got a defective item or their perception is different than mine. 

As for having to program it every day, that’s not really true. Set it once, then when you hold the program button the next time, it automatically goes to the last time you programmed it for. All you have to do is release the button and you’re all set. Just push the button again to make it light up and you’re good to go! If you brew the same time every day, then it’s taken care of. If not, you’d have to have reset it anyway. 

Flavor: We’re very happy with that, too. We use freshly ground Starbucks, Green Mountain, Pete’s and the like, 1 tablespoon/cup, which comes to 3/4 C. per 12 C. pot. We’ve used that measure for several different 12 C. coffee makers, most recently a Mr. Coffee, and it makes a fine pot of coffee. If you start with stale, poor quality ground coffee, you’re going to end up with bad tasting brewed coffee. We’ve found that we have to use almost twice as much grocery store-type coffee to get a halfway decent flavor, which ends up being as or more expensive that just starting with decent coffee in the first place. You get what you pay for. 

Tip: to get rid of that “new machine plastic flavor,” run the coffee maker twice with a full load of water, but no coffee, then make a pot or two of cheap coffee and discard. Your coffee maker is now “seasoned” and the new machine flavor is gone.
